HIST4896: History Day Mentor Internship

HIST 4896 is an internship course designed to engage you as a mentor in area classrooms, working with students in grades 6-12, through the National History Day in Minnesota program. This internship requires that you complete 100 hours of mentoring work with your to-be-assigned school(s) in the Twin Cities. The focus of your internship hours will be in the classroom working with students, providing individualized project support about the historical inquiry process, research, and writing. Additional hours may be fulfilled through participation in other History Day support services, assistance with events and contests, and UMN-campus library visits. The purpose of this internship is to build connections with students and teachers while providing support on this academically rigorous project. You will be provided with tools and training to assist your assigned schools to the best of your ability. The History Day mentor program is a unique opportunity to apply your historical thinking and academic skills in a real-world educational environment, working with students in middle and high school from a variety of different backgrounds. The connections you make in applied learning situations (internships and/or service learning) can be a determining factor in shaping future career paths, graduate education, and the way that you think about history. Your efforts will assist teachers on the frontlines of historical education, and you will help build pathways to higher education for your students.
